Vintage 1971 Alley Cat by Betsey Johnson "Happy People" Sweater Dress Betsey Johnson started out as a funky kid designer at Paraphernalia. She joined Alley Cat in 1970 and eventually became head designer for the junior sportswear company. Betsey was (and is still) fashion forward, exciting and imaginative. She infuses color into her rockabilly and rock & roll looks. Betsey created multiple smash-hit collections for Alley Cat. She was also part owner of NY boutique: Betsey, Bunky & Nini. Betseys designs were successful due to their price points and for her fun, whimsical, colorful play on clothes that makes everyone feel happy. This iconic vintage Betsey Johnson Alley Cat Sweater Dress is incredibly unique, extremely rare, and is sure to stun all. This dress comes from the Happy People collection produced in 1971. The textile features its namesake Happy People figures with colorful, bright stripes. The base color is black with red cuffs & collar. Fabric is tightly woven knitted wool. Silhouette is fitted with A-line flare that reaches below the knee with hem at the ankles (I am 51). It's one piece, pull-over, unlined, with no closures. It is very clean and smells nice. The brand label & size tag are attached. It's authentic, these sweater dresses are instantly recognizable, and are truly pieces of art! Size: 7/8 This iconic Alley Cat Happy People is in excellent, vintage, pre-owned condition. The colors are vibrant, and the fabric is in great condition. There are no holes or stains. There is a small defect on the right shoulder (see last photo). There is no pilling or shrinkage to the fabric and it isn't stretched out. The fabric has no signs of dry rot; it is still semi-soft with some stretch. The Happy People are sharp & clear and it's still easy to see the details on their faces, fingers and clothing. The inside of the dress is equally gorgeous, the reverse weave results in bright stripes. The original red Alley Cat label is still attached along with the size tag. All the hems are still attached and the ends are not fraying. This dress is over 50 years old; it's condition is amazing. The last two pictures are from a Glamour magazine feature in April 1971. Measurements (laid flat): Shoulders(taken from outer edge to edge): 15" Bust: 30-35" Waist: 24-29" Hips: 32-37" Sleeves: 23" Total length: 46" Care instructions: There are no care label instructions; I assume it needs to be cleaned by a professional dry cleaner Sorry no returns, review photos and descriptions before purchase Free shipping via UPS, FedEx or USPS Priority Mail (whichever is cheaper) with insurance & delivery confirmation Sales tax will be collected and paid by eBay in applicable states.
