Antique 18th Century, Circa late 1700's to early 1800's, Woman's Hat, Coif with a scalloped edge around the face. European. For the 18th century woman, these kind of hats were an icon of wealth. This model was worn on special occasions with the woman's hair tucked underneath. This handmade hat has a soft linen interior fabric fit snuggly on the head. This one does not appear to have had a neck ribbon, instead the fabric is gathered at the neck line. The exterior is embellished with intricate, lace like embroidery stitching with metal threads colored gold. It is decorated with blue and clear glass beads, colored foil, gold coils, silver leaves and sequins. It consists of two panels sewn together. The front of the coif also has extensive embroidery work that is exquisite. Please see photos for details. The stand is not included with the purchase of this hat. Please see photos for details. Condition: This coif is in fairly good condition considering the fact that it is over 200 years old.The right panel has fabric that has separated from the center seam and is fraying.The interior is stained, it can be spot cleaned with a mild soap.The metal threads are tarnished.Some beads and embroidery stitching may be missing.There are a few places were the hat is worn down to the linen lining.
